MILAN MENS F/W 11.12 HIGHLIGHTS.

When ‘evaluating’ show highlights, I’ll pick the overall best from each city. The looks need not be jaw-dropping but show quality and staging of the show is crucial. A noteworthy show will sell even more than those of great designs—ask the local brand-whore, they should know. (Brand-whore: someone who ‘buy brands’ under the belief that it brings prestige to their otherwise lack of taste, regardless of quality or value. Thank you, urban dictionary.)

First up; Burberry Prorsum by Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey. Upon seeing the new Burberry collection, I would like to think that Bailey was thinking of me when editing the looks. It is everything that I would wear; oversized sculptural outerwear, bonded wool and slim leg trousers— what more can I ask for?

True, some pieces were tacky and looked like the interior of a Texas trucker’s truck but I’m not complaining. I have to say, if not for the teal, tangerine and the rain at the end, the show might just be boring. When you mix model and wet, it is always a good thing.

Muiccia build a two-storied ‘house’ for guest at the fall-winter show with flooring coated with a prep of linseed oil and powdered cork. It should be an amazing experience if you’re at the show but for us who have to rely on the Internet, it’s a little underwhelming.

Following last season’s wonderful compilation, no wonder most of us were disappointed. I see Prada as the tastemakers for the lesser-known brands and as the ‘dictator’ of next season’s trends. Glitter tops are no longer groundbreaking in the menswear scene but the play of proportion is current. Sad to say, the current menswear collection fell short. And it looks like the women’s collection is forecast to be as dull as dishwater.

Lastly, Monclear Gamme Bleu (still have no idea what that means) by Thom Browne. Every season is like a guessing game—what will Thom Browne do next? The latest show doesn’t sit well with me. I like how it was presented but poor beagles was suffering and models were pissed. It really doesn’t matter how the clothes were because no one was looking at it anyways. There are better ways to stage a spectacular show; to me five horses and 20 beagles is not one of them.

BURBERRY PRORSUM, FALL 2010.11 MENS.

How dedicated, I’m posting this while riding the train.

If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Likewise, experimentation is not always a good thing. Especially when you get carried away.

This was said to be a collection in homage to Burberry’s outerwear heritage. “Protect, explore, and inspire. A salute to our heritage- Burberry parade coats”-Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer. But, why make reference to the past just after the release of an all-young cast for the spring-summer campaign?

I have this saying “ Burberry is what I would wear but Raf is how I would design.” I don’t think it is applicable for the first few looks of this collection. I thought the aviator and fur coats was rather flamboyant (Not an adjective that I normally use to describe a Burberry collection) and did not go so well with the later looks. Don’t you think the first few outifts look better with round-point shoes instead of a fur-lined boots?

While I am very much in love with the inky hue of coats and trenches, the military pieces looked like refined Balmain. My favorite was look 23, the mustard nappa trench worn by Danny Arter. I’m really warming my feeling towards the collection.

BURBERRY SPRING SUMMER 2010 AD CAMPAIGN- BEHIND THE SCENES.

Emma Watson was causing such hoo-ha. Not for her celebrity status but the photochopped magic that was used on her leg. And some have evidence to prove it. Yes, yes, we can see her calf on that video but have you ever thought that things would appear differently on various angles? Shouldn’t the result look exactly like the released picture if you were to shot it from the front? It was shopped for sure but I don’t think anything was ‘chopped’ during the process of editing. Fyi: That was my least favorite picture of the bunch.

I like the past seasons ad campaign better, the latest one, not so much. I would have liked it more if was shot against a plain background, I thought the backdrop was unnecessary. It makes the campaign a little too Dior or Chanel, the porcelain backdrop decoration was very contrasting to the image that Burberry wants for its brand; a younger Burberry. The backdrop was just not supposed to be there, it’s distracting! (Yes, that was my OCD speaking) Another thing that was distracting was the shade/shadow that was coming from every random corner. Maybe it would nice as a spread on print. Hopefully the bind will separate the awkward space. (Which I think it will)

Besides that, I thought the styling was good and the ad campaign sums up the latest spring collection really well. The all-English cast made the ad more believable too. I hope Christopher Bailey will continue doing so instead of using models. I love the previous ad campaign with models but I thought using real people gave the ad campaign more identity and a made it a memorable one. It wasn’t like any redundant ad that we’ve seen so far. It was English and it was Burberry. Oh Hi Alex Watson!

THANK YOU, BURBERRY.

It all began with an email. An email sent by a certain fairy godmother with the help from a particular generous blogger.
Five years of blogging, I’m still dumbfounded by the power of the Internet. After today, I still am. Twelve hours since the event and I can’t stop thinking about it— The color of Christopher Bailey’s hair, Amelia Awi’s moving praises, Miss Natasha Davis kind gesture, more, more, and more.

It’s like William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, except this play involves a Romeo and a stalker fan— Me blabbering about the arrival of Christopher Bailey and stalking him during the event.
Meeting Christopher Bailey and the great people who shaped the industry was a full circle moment. This opportunity has allowed me to do what I love and taught me that dreams do come true. Thank You to the kind people at Burberry, you have no idea how blessed I feel to be part of the event yesterday.

PS: Mr. Bailey, if you’re reading this, can I design one look for the next menswear collection? Okay, maybe just a trench. No, a bag. No, a pair of sandals!

Hey, dreams do come true no?

MILAN MENS S/S 2010 HIGHLIGHTS.

Literal translation were depict through colors mostly, not so much in form of werability or function for summer. Milan was overloaded with mesh, too much mesh. Clothes were looking too concrete on purpose rather than "running off to Hawaii" Prada said before the show.

To follow, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana did jackets with heavy metallic and sequins embellishments. The only garment that could relate to summer was the y-fronts on Madonna's boy toy.

At Burberry, Christopher Bailey showed variety from crayon hues to chalky pastels. Tailored outers were slouchy and looking wilted-- in a good presentable way. Blazers unlined, puckering trenches seams evoked precipitousness but still was well executed.

Minimalists run the risk of under-designing-- And I couldn't agree more. The much anticipated Jil Sander Collection was unsatisfactory. Raf Simon showed a washed-out collection at Jil, which lacks designs. Inspired by Japanese-French painter Tsuguharu Foujita (and possibly Prada's trembled blossom ) , Tsuguharu's paintings of Western bodies were excessively 'painted' across shirts, pants and knitwear.

Another minimalist that showed in Milan was Calvin Klein. Zucchelli meticulous tailoring techniques and minor detailing was abundance yet subtle. Despite the bold and masculine structure of the clothes, everything seems weightless or tissue-weight.
