MILAN MENS F/W 11.12 HIGHLIGHTS.

When ‘evaluating’ show highlights, I’ll pick the overall best from each city. The looks need not be jaw-dropping but show quality and staging of the show is crucial. A noteworthy show will sell even more than those of great designs—ask the local brand-whore, they should know. (Brand-whore: someone who ‘buy brands’ under the belief that it brings prestige to their otherwise lack of taste, regardless of quality or value. Thank you, urban dictionary.)

First up; Burberry Prorsum by Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey. Upon seeing the new Burberry collection, I would like to think that Bailey was thinking of me when editing the looks. It is everything that I would wear; oversized sculptural outerwear, bonded wool and slim leg trousers— what more can I ask for?

True, some pieces were tacky and looked like the interior of a Texas trucker’s truck but I’m not complaining. I have to say, if not for the teal, tangerine and the rain at the end, the show might just be boring. When you mix model and wet, it is always a good thing.

Muiccia build a two-storied ‘house’ for guest at the fall-winter show with flooring coated with a prep of linseed oil and powdered cork. It should be an amazing experience if you’re at the show but for us who have to rely on the Internet, it’s a little underwhelming.

Following last season’s wonderful compilation, no wonder most of us were disappointed. I see Prada as the tastemakers for the lesser-known brands and as the ‘dictator’ of next season’s trends. Glitter tops are no longer groundbreaking in the menswear scene but the play of proportion is current. Sad to say, the current menswear collection fell short. And it looks like the women’s collection is forecast to be as dull as dishwater.

Lastly, Monclear Gamme Bleu (still have no idea what that means) by Thom Browne. Every season is like a guessing game—what will Thom Browne do next? The latest show doesn’t sit well with me. I like how it was presented but poor beagles was suffering and models were pissed. It really doesn’t matter how the clothes were because no one was looking at it anyways. There are better ways to stage a spectacular show; to me five horses and 20 beagles is not one of them.

ACCESSORIES, MENS S/S 2010 HIGHLIGHTS.

Louis Vuitton Mens S/S11 Paris.

For most, the go-to brand when purchasing a designer bag or accessories would be Louis Vuitton. With Marc Jacobs reinventing the classics, the conventional monogram never gets old. This spring, in line with the ‘active-wear’ trend, the house of Vuitton sent droves of ‘sporty’ bags down the runway. For the brand-whores, it might be a little disappointing— monograms were lightly imprinted; the Damier pieces were current and the leather goods are elegant. Simply put, there’s something for everyone, the sartorial man or the eccentric.

Burberry Mens S/S11 Milan

Oh Burberry, every young lad’s fashion fantasy. I must say, it’s a little too late for the rockability chic but damn, those pieces are stunning! I had the privilege of previewing some of the pieces beforehand and it wasn’t as impressive as on the runway. I like the fact that most of the bags are not your average in-your-face accessories and very understated. When previewing the lookbook, I was immediately drawn to those sandals— but again, I think Burberry don’t cater for the masses, only the hip and young.

Lanvin Mens S/S11 Paris.

Expect ridiculous prices for Lucas Ossendrijver’s innovative designs. The accessories are tribal-inspired and sporty; again, a key trend in menswear fashion since last fall. The shoes, bags and accessories are second to none—It’s really nothing revolutionary, the brand is known for it’s radical approach but this season was simply amazing. So much so that it put some womenswear collection to shame.

I’ve always wanted a Lanvin’s footwear but it will cost me about six months worth of my lunch money. Let’s hope that when I can afford these, Alber’s apprentice would still be design for Lanvin Homme.

MILAN MENS S/S 2011 HIGHLIGHTS.

There aren’t any shows that I dislike. Surprisingly, even Westwood was likable. Milan was magical as compared to the previous season. As for Jil Sander, it deserves a post of it's own.

Gianfranco Ferre tops my list for Milan this season. At Ferre, it’s like a re-cap of fashion’s best collection from past season. Despite looking like Burberry Prorsum’s Spring 2009 and Dries Van Noten’s two seasons back, the collection was made for my liking. References to Raf Simons and Calvin Klein’s past collection were also evident.

As always, Prada never disappoints. Not necessarily something I would wear but I appreciate its innovative approach to designs. Many critics commented that it was a poor execution of Comme Des Garcons Circa 1994. I say it’s a great collection nonetheless. (I browsed archives and I have to agree, it’s very derivative of Comme Des garcons; the shoes especially.)

Coming in third is Calin klein. I really love the suits, the fabrics as well were interesting and colour choices were brilliant. I have to say, I am all for innovation but the bare mid-drift is not appropriate (unless worn with something under). They could sell them to Erin Wasson or her boo but I really hate it to see on any men.

Really, I do not find anything interesting about this collection other than the footwear. Burberry is a brand that I simply love to love. There’s no avoiding falling in love with any of their collection. The clothes, the cuts and silhouette may look the same but it’s their attention to detail that makes it special. One thing that should have not is there was the studded leather jacket. It’s a little too late for that and I think it was a desperate attempt to be edgy and ‘young’.

BURBERRY PRORSUM LIVE IN 3D: PARIS, NEW YORK, DUBAI, TOKYO & LOS ANGELES.

Besides London, the attendees in Paris, New York, Dubai and Tokyo were able to watch the live streaming in 3D. Twitter convert, Bryanboy was on ground to tweet live in New York along with Joe Zee. Why didn’t Burberry do it in Singapore since we have the largest store in SEA? Imagine that.

How extremely rude of me to fall asleep during the streaming, was everyone else glued to the screen at midnight? I stayed awake until… all I could remember was Anna Wintour saying, “Burr-breeze”. Maybe because I was too tired doing emails with regards to streaming the show on MYKOMAG. Or maybe I wasn’t as excited as before.

You see I’m still processing the men’s collection with the ‘abrupt’ change of direction in their clothes. The military influence was evident and I’m not a fan of such stuff – leave that to Balmain? Okay I get it, homage to Burberry outerwear heritage but can’t we be subtle with the military approach? I’m having hard time liking the collection this season and I don’t know how to put it in words. I’ll warm up to the collection but I think it’s taking too long. To say that I didn’t like it, it’s difficult because I’ve never dislike a Burberry collection.

I thought it was a little too late for thigh-high boots and no one who is of a normal size is going to look nice in those clothes. The clothes wasn’t focused on designs as compared to spring, it was more about buckles and buttons and more metal hardware on the garments. All in all I liked it but did I think it was epic-omg-groundbreaking? Not really.

BURBERRY MINI ME LOOKS S/S 2010.

Too cute! Too cute! I love children! (Not in the King Of Pop kind of way but I love children as in I want my own.)

I wont be buying a whole closet for my children anytime soon. Because it doesn’t mean that if the clothes are meant for your brother/sisters/daughters/nieces/grandchildren, they cost less. Not true. These little cuteness comes with a hefty price tag too. An average trench coat for kids can cost up to USD 395! (That’s like SGD 520?)

Not too sure if this is the first time for Burberry-- making miniature version of the of-the-runway key pieces but if they do, I want to see more!

I can imagine Suri Cruise wearing the pink trench. With customized heels from the spring-summer collection.
