MONSIEUR IS LEGIT.

For those of you who have yet to wish Dinie, you’re already late! Last weekend ONESIXTYNOTEPAD convened at the very pretty Conrad Centennial to commemorate his 21st birthday. Congratulations Din, you are finally legit!

The party was an intimate affair with 4 of Dinie’s closest friends. And we paid homage to Dinie’s devotion to fashion with a Chanel-themed party, no less. Perhaps there weren’t any tweed or 2.55 involved but naturally everyone had to be in black & white, and the décor – Parisian chic. But amidst the fashion we had to throw in some kitsch – with the cupcakes and helium balloons - just to remind Dinie that his teenage heydays are finally over. Indeed.

Of course what you’ll see here are only the glam shots. What ensued after this involved some major hanky-panky: Dinie doing Kabuki in a makeshift bed-comforter-turned-Geisha Kimono while I gyrated at the camera with pseudo Valentino Haute Couture FW 2010 blindfold. The rest, I suppose, is history.

45 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE.

In just hours, we’ll be celebrating our nation’s 45th year of independence. Certainly everyone is not as patriotic but c’mon, you’ve got to give props to a nation that has achieved success despite being so young. Sometimes you just have to embrace your country—even after the abduction of our boys in the military (Generations of today have strong beliefs in Dior, not war) and the occasionally f-up climate—for most of us, Singapore is home sweet home.

AFTER GUCCI TWO.

I was considering this as the blog title: Because waiting for him to provide text might take another decade and the fact that he types with both index fingers doesn’t help either. Afraid that he will go overboard with the self-admiration description, I’ve decided to assist him. And by assisting, I meant writing the whole of this post.

Ridhwan’s thought process is very different from mine; I just take whatever while his is rather complex. We differ on style matters and we both dismiss each other’s opinion most of the time. On cooperative occasion, like the day this picture was taken, he went with my suggestions. He very much prefers quirky (not that it’s a bad thing) look as opposed to the casual, clean get-up but after seeing these pictures for himself, he was very pleased.

The individual pieces itself have a story to tell— the jacket was painstakingly tough to get and it was a gift for his 21st, so he could wear for his exhibition. (That, ladies and gentlemen is how you do gifting on a budget.) The bottom was his second pair; the first one had stains so I took home for washing now it’s mine. (Oh, did I also mention that Ridhwan is extremely generous? Hah)

You see, one could only imagine how long he takes to get ready. I guess that’s for me to know and for you to find out— hopefully when he decides to write the next post.

BEHIND THE SCENES, HARPER'S BAZAAR SHOOT.

Who wouldn’t be curious to peek into the behind-the-scenes of a Harper’s Bazaar shoot? Especially one that gathers that many kooky, l’enfant terribles of our very own fashion industry; mismatched socks, Prada pigtails, ethnic exoticism – any prevalent trend, you name it. Cast no doubt, this ought to be interesting from the get-go.

The shoot took place at a cozy studio space at Mount Sophia. The OSN team, dressed to the nines (in monochromatic tones of course), scampered around this old Methodist Girl’s School campus, first musing about where to find the inconspicuously located gents and later in distress looking for that particular Block 3C.

Alas, we were the earliest to arrive. But of course, this was a shoot for a fashion magazine so the rule about being fashionably late stands. Who were we kidding! But all was well. We settled down and soaked up the atmosphere of our inaugural feature in Bazaar. Slowly, people started coming in dribs and drabs.

We were very heartened by how professional the shoot was handled. We had our little ‘green room’ space to prep ourselves and there were many Bazaar staff who were more than happy to aid us. Our clothes were steamed and hung nicely on the racks (you may be surprised that this is not a given sometimes). Kim Reyes, the ever sprightly fashion editor gave a warm welcome and later engaged with each and every one of us while the test shoot was on going. Everyone felt very much at home.

Do also note the esteemed company that we had for that day. James Bent of Outre, Laila from RockTheTrend, Bobo from BoboBaroque and designer Mae Pang were amongst the numerous individuals that were present. Some are old friends while many of the acquaintances became BFFs by the end of the shoot. Case in point: Mae Pang and I later discovered that we salute the same Alma Mater and have a lot more in common.

The actual shoot was colourful, spotting bouts of laughter every few seconds. The crew behind the photographer tried very hard to hold back their chuckle while the rest of us ‘trial test’ our signature pose. Do we give a Sasha pout? How about thrusting our heads back with smoky eyes, hand extended from the mini ladder? Right…very vogue indeed. Thankfully, there was Windy, Bazaar’s stylist, to pull all of us back to Earth to get an earnest, honest shoot.

The day concluded with a post-shoot discussion on the future of Singapore’s Fashion. It felt for once the voices of the emerging leaders of our local fashion industry are chorusing in unison about their woes and prides, leaving everyone feeling very nuanced about how they see Singapore’s Fashion.

The full day spent for the shoot was not in vain and it was clear that this feature came out of a genuine concern to amplify the sentiments of our young fashion custodians. ONESIXTYNOTEPAD is honored to have been invited. Thank you Harper’s Bazaar!

GREENER PASTURES.

Pun intended.

I will never stop dreaming. Not when I was unwanted, not for when we didn’t have any cash for school. Not even now when I had my scholarship taken away and I won’t stop dreaming, never. If that’s the price for having a distinct voice, I am more than willing to give that up because my principles matter most.

There are many reasons to believe what others have to say. Long story short, yes, I’ve left the institution. As a matter of fact, I planned my move when the first problem arises two years back. Trust me, I have lots to reveal but I figured why not toast to a new beginning instead.

Yesterday taught me an important lesson and ironically, it was at a party. The moment I stepped out of the elevator to see the beautiful Singapore skyline, I see doors and doors of opportunities. My point is, you should always look on the bright side of life and be inspired. The world is huge and for every door that closes on you, there will be ten more elsewhere. No one says it better than Rick Astley himself; never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never run around and desert you. Sing it to your dreams once in awhile and you’ll be fine.

AFTER LAUNCH OF GUCCI.

I know… this post was uncalled for. The goal: a conscious effort to dress well. Not necessarily dressing up to the nines but to put some thoughts to my outfit. Trust me, it’s not really the case of me wanting to showoff my clothes. If that were the main purpose, I would have posted the entire lookbook from Uniqlo since all my clothes are from there anyways.

Moving on.

I desperately need something to inspire me to shed those pounds and I guess to put myself up on this space will at least motivate me to look better. For those who have been following in the previous style journal would have known how much I’ve gained. About 39.6 pounds later, here I am again posting pictures of myself up here. (No, no don’t get me wrong; I’m not morbidly obese or even overweight!) That’s reason number one and number two will be shared in the next post.

Oh yes, the outfit. It was for a Gucci press event I went earlier that day. Basically I start with the lambs wool sweater and assuming that there will be a huge billboard of Gucci logos to take picture against, I thought the colour would look good against that background. (You have no idea how embarrass I am to reveal my thought process to you but there you go, that’s how I think). I’ve worn it a couple of times but I styled it differently, a different shirt makes a whole lot of difference.

As for the shoes, they’re vintage Dunhill. (Kidding, I just love saying that. It makes everything expensive and exclusive) I didn’t realized how matchy-matchy it was with the top till I view them in pictures! Well I guess that’s my outfit-post debut, more to come!

MEET THE NABSTERS.

I’ve been meaning to do an introductory post but the government had other plans, abducting my teammates and making them play with guns in the jungle. Seriously what’s the point of military? We at ONESIXTYNOTEPAD play with glitters, gold glitters not guns.

Anyway.

While most of you are familiar with Ridhwan (who is also serving the nation atm), let me introduce you to the blog’s newest addition (also a contributor at MYKROMAG), Nabil Aliffi.

We met three years ago, It was backstage at a show, he was in his all-white uniform with an (orange?) Hermes Constance belt. Who pairs that with a school uniform right? Right, only someone who eats, lives, and breathes fashion. From first impression, I’ve always thought that he is truly a diamond in the rough.

You see, Nabsters is an interesting character; to us he is like a younger brother, barely legal but really smart (smarter than me actually) and reliable. We faced difficulties understanding and having doubts (maybe because he’s an actor? hah) about his intentions at first but with time, he turned to this great friend and teammate. He’s all about the 411s and hard work. He’s the missing piece to the puzzle that completes the team. Always fun to have him around!

Well there you go. I’ll not make this post into a matchmaking agency page okay? I’m sure you’ll get to know more about him in the entries to come, so stay tuned!

ABOUT STUFF.

Just yesterday I went on a two-day ‘do-you-work-dinie-no-sleep’ marathon and I fell asleep while sitting on the toilet seat while getting ready. (No I wasn’t doing anything, just taking a nap I swear) I was late for class and then I decided not to turn up at all because life is a mess and I couldn’t take it so, the logical thing to do was to crawl back to bed and avoid all phone calls. Now, I’m kinda mad at myself for being such a sloth. I’m still not back on track with everything yet (As you can see. It's 5am now) but I hope to get hold of everything by this week.

I am drowning in shitloads of work ya’ll. Ya’ll. Ya’ll. School is killing me. Oh, did I mention that I took up a job as a man-nanny? Yes, a Manny. Too much responsibility yet so little time! Trying my best to juggle school, MYKROMAG, a job and in the midst of moving out to a new home. I have to sardine myself with the rest of the family in a house while waiting for the other house in June. Can you imagine the stress I’m going through right now with assessment and shits?

The funny thing, the invites and sponsorship are coming in like crazy! There are about eight events next week and two interviews and I don’t even know what to do about it! I thought I had it all figured out at the beginning of the semester but no it didn’t turn out as well as I thought it would be. Why do all good things have to happen at this point of time! Omg stress.

Thankfully I’ll be on my way for doctor's appointment in abit and we all know how it’s like. I always return happy. So I’ll see you later?

WE'RE ON STYLE:, FEB 2010!

I love style: magazine! Okay fine, I can’t afford VOGUE but whatever, don’t judge! But really, I do love style: magazine. Don’t you just love the whole red prosperity vibe on the cover? Will go very nicely with your Lunar New year outfit.

Also, ahem, yours truly, your ‘VIP STYLE BLOGGER’ is in one of the pages. It’s really tiny but yeah. You can call me that anytime! I’m not picky! (I’m sure there will be a group of people talking behind my back about how I ‘brag’ about appearing on the magazine. Hello please lah, have some sense of humor.)

Anyway, had a tweet session with Sharon T of style:. My first reaction to seeing naked Cole Mohr on the magazine was ‘WHAT’ and then I look at the top of the page and then I go like ‘eh eh Sharon like Cole Mohr’. Coincidentally that night I tweeted this: can somebody make me love balmain and cole mohr? i just cant like them.

And here’s our tweetversation:
@Onesixtynotepad Am not sure about Balmain, but I can make you like Cole Mohr. :-)
@SharonTulasidas make me! i saw him nekkid on feb issue of style: and then i saw your name. i was like 'eh eh sharon like cole mohr' haha
@Onesixtynotepad OMFG! I think he is a total BILF. Haha!

A MALAY WEDDING RECEPTION.

I was at my friend’s sister’s wedding reception at the Malay Heritage Centre yesterday. Ahh, what a great time to escape from all those fashion week reviews! And a great time to catch up with my family too, haven’t seen them in like forever!

I remembered, not so long ago, the bride and me were selling stuff at a local flea and now she’s married. Hmm, how long before I got married myself. My mum would so die for events like this. Oh! And she needs to stop asking my friends to marry me for large sum of money.

1. We don’t have that much money.
2. I don’t want to marry any of my friends!

Eh, why am I discussing marriage!

Dinie.
