GUCCI, SPRING 2011 MENS.

Usually the staple garment from Gucci would be the cropped leather jacket that we all know and adore but for SS’11 the double-breasted mercerized suit is the clear winner. We have to credit Frida Giannini for doing away with the stuffy-ness of this variety of suits and for styling it in a manner that is easy and casual. Maybe now we can consider ways to incorporate it into our wardrobes without it feeling out of place or overly dapper for our daily whereabouts. This certainly makes the double-breasted suit a bubbling trend for this summer.

That said, the collection as a whole is very characteristic of Gucci’s jet-setting vibe but I’m afraid that might just be its shortfall, the fact that there is nothing new to jolt us off our seats. The summer shorts, silk shirts and safari scarves – we have seen these before. Unlike the SS11 collection for women’s wear, which is clearly provoking, this one is subdued. But perhaps it then makes sense that the men’s collection complements the women’s line as contrasts.

Perhaps the collection may not be Frida Giannini’s freshest or most modern to date but this offering is still legitimately Gucci indeed. Her fabric choices are luxe as always and the jet setter vibe is still very much at the core of her aesthetics. It is Gucci as we know it.

GUCCI SPRING/SUMMER 2011 RE-SEE, MILAN.

I’m ecstatic to share this piece of news and you're most definitely in for a treat! For the first time ever, our readers will get to exclusively ‘preview’ Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection many days ahead of the local press; press presentation will be held sometime only next week!

It’s such a shame to have missed one of Milan’s ‘Big 5’ as we were unfortunately scheduled to land a day after the Gucci Spring/Summer 2011 show. However, a re-see (I wasn’t familiar with this term before the trip but it’s actually a ‘process’ which allows editors and buyers to inspect and hold the clothes and the collection up-close) was arranged at the headquarters the very next day.

The exterior of the headquarters looked understated but the interior was nothing but sheer opulence! I can’t really describe the location because frankly, like all my other Milan experiences, everything was engulfed in a daze and I could hardly recall anything about a particular place. Just to prove my point further, I was too engrossed digesting Gucci’s DNA crash-course that was fed to me. Rest assure that you’ll be as numb too if you’re surrounded by that many beautiful creations of Frida Giannini!

The showroom was divided into two; one for editors, the other a buyers-only section where they had all the pieces in variety of colours (how very top secret!). I was told that the collection embodies strong Gucci women, revisiting its heritage and roots with lots of luxuriant craftsmanship put into each piece. Metal hardware such as safety pins was infused to many of the pieces, playing with the ‘hard and soft’ contrast of metal embellishments against the silky fabrics. Most of the accessories this season were handmade; even the boots were delicately woven by hands!

The trip to the headquarters was (and there’s no word better to describe this experience) epic. Everyone needs to understand the brand’s DNA and it definitely peaked us a better understanding and appreciation towards the brand because as we all know it, Gucci is not just a brand, it’s a lifestyle.

GUCCI PRESS LAUNCH OF BASEL 2010 COLLECTIONS.

Today’s press launch of Gucci timepieces is a cause for celebration; Gucci timepieces now made accessible thanks to the recent partnership with Pacific Time. With vast scope of distributor support in the region, the latest Basel 2010 collection will be available in countries such as Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan in no time.

The press launch was held at Pan-Pacific Hotel (Oh the irony of everything ‘Pacific’) and in attendance was Mediacorp and Fly Entertainment artistes Felicia Chin, Thomas Ong, Rebecca Tan and the very suave Shaun Chen. The celebs were decked in head to toe Gucci and of course, accessorized with Gucci timepieces.

While the celeb’s alluring presence might have distracted some of us, the highlight of the event was the new line of Gucci timepieces for women called the U-Play. Creative Director Frida Giannini designed the timepieces, distinguished by its functionality and versatility. The go-get-one factor lies in the interchangeable design of the components that allows you to change combination of colours and materials. Besides the U-Play range, the G-Timeless and G-Frame was also on display.

Viewing too many watches certainly opened up a new interest for luxury watches. Today’s press launch of Gucci timepieces is a cause for celebration; to some, but not myself. I’ll be longing for the G-Timeless, sans diamonds of course.
